The scholarship fund recognizes Gapenski’s dedication and service to the field of healthcare finance and will provide financial support for students in the department of health services research, management and policy who are pursuing an interest in healthcare finance.

His books are used nationally and internationally, having been translated into nine languages. Gapenski and his wife Jane have also been generous financial supporters of the college, establishing professorship and scholarship funds in the department.

“When we endow this scholarship, we honor Lou Gapenski,” said David Hammer, master’s in business administration/master’s in health administration ’87, who helped raise money for the fund. “We also continue his devotion to preparing our future colleagues to lead in ways that maintain a sound financial position for our healthcare delivery system.”

Master’s in Health Administration student, Ellington C. Jones, was awarded second place in the graduate student division of the Richard J. Stull Student Essay Competition in Healthcare Management. The purpose of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) competition is to encourage future healthcare executives to clarify and evaluate important topics in their profession.

Jones’ essay, “Just Prove IT: A Leadership Plan to Making Meaningful Use Stick,” focused on the federal government’s Meaningful Use Incentive Program, which will provide millions of dollars to hospitals and physicians to adopt the use of electronic health records. In his essay, he provides a three-phased strategy health care leaders could use to help their organizations meet Meaningful Use and realize the competitive advantages that exist by meeting the requirements.

The paper has earned him an invitation to the Congress on Healthcare Leadership in March. Jones also received a $2,000 award and support for travel expenses to attend the Congress in Chicago. Awards will be presented at the luncheon and meeting.
