Dr. Keith J. Benson is the new MHA Program Director effective July 1, 2019.  He comes from Winthrop University where he was the Director of Graduate Studies and Director of the Healthcare Management Program.

Benson started his career as a Veterinary Technician/Military Public Health Technician in the United States Air Force.  He served over eight years in the USAF and has experience in health care management, military public health, and medical intelligence.  Since leaving the USAF, Benson worked as an instructor in health policy and administration at Penn State University and a Professor in Health Care Management in the College of Business Administration at Winthrop University.   Benson has taught graduate and undergraduate classes in health care management, management, leadership, business administration, and general education.  His research focuses on leadership, health care administration pedagogy, and the value of community health partnerships.  His work is published in the Journal of Healthcare Administration Education, Advances in Business Research, Annual Advances in Business Cases, CPA Report, Southern Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Hospital Topics, Journal of Health and Human Services Administration, and the Journal of Health, Politics, Policy, and Law.  In 2011 and 2012, Benson was the Visiting Scholar at the Institute for Leadership at the United States Coast Guard Academy.

Benson has consulted with numerous not-for-profit organizations, specializing in Board Governance and Strategic Planning.  He has served on several not-for-profit boards throughout his career ranging from local-level to national-level boards.  Benson served as Board Chair of the Association of University Programs in Healthcare Administration (AUPHA) in 2017-2018.   Benson has been recognized for his work with multiple teaching and service awards.

Benson has a PhD in Health Policy and Administration, specialization in management, from Penn State University; MHA from Penn State University, MBA in Strategic Leadership from Winthrop University; BS in Business Management from the University of Maryland, and an AS in Environmental Medicine from the Community College of the Air Force.

Benson is married to Lori (nee Fox) for over 30 years and they have five children, Kyle, Megan, Mark, Andrew (deceased), and Claire. Kyle and Megan are graduates of the United States Coast Guard Academy, Mark is a graduate of Winthrop University, and Claire is a student in Biomedical Engineering at the University of South Carolina.

Benson is an avid college football fan. He has gone to Penn State Football games for over 50 years and is looking forward to watching games in The Swamp.  And yes, he already has UF Football season tickets. His hobbies include golf, swimming, and cooking, especially in old cast iron pans.
